Andy Murray: Will the former number one bow out at Wimbledon 2019?
After a dramatic five set loss in Melbourne – a flood of tributes erupted from fellow professionals and fans around the world as if it was the last time Murray would be seen gracing a tennis court. Although the multiple grand slam winner has speculated that it could be his last match, he has also stated that he wishes to end his career at Wimbledon if he’s physically able.
Murray was clearly struggling physically during his loss to Bautista-Agut but the reality is that a straight sets loss would have been the outcome if he had severe issues. The fact he managed to compete with a man who beat Djokovic just a few weeks ago illustrates he’s still capable of producing world class performances. Perhaps not to the level needed to win events or progress through multiple rounds – but enough for a farewell at Wimbledon? This seems probable especially as the event is so important to him. Can he resist a send off from a home crowd?
The only obstacle opposing this is major surgery which could cause a decline in his physical condition between now and the summer.
Odds for a (Unlikely) Wimbledon Triumph?
Bookmaker and exchange activity often offers an accurate insight into the probability of an outcome occurring. The screenshot below shows the current market for Wimbledon 2019 as of publication. The odds shown are subject to change.

As shown, Andy Murray is priced at 9/1 (10.00) – 16/1 (17.00) which implies a probability of just 5.9 – 10%. Is that accurate or an opportunity presenting value? The Tennis Tips UK team think the probability of Murray competing and finishing his career at Wimbledon is relatively high. There are more detailed and comprehensive odds and new betting sites for tennis available.
However the physical endurance required to actually progress through multiple rounds and win the event is almost certainly beyond reach. The field will be populated with the likes of Federer, Nadal, Zverev and various others who are a level above Murray over the five set format currently. That’s likely to be a dream too far for the Scott.
